Tax refund and residual tax 2026: payment dates and due dates

Taxation for 2025 is completed in 2026 in different months for different people, and this determines when a tax refund reaches your account or when the remaining tax falls due. This guide shows all the payment and due dates, interest rates and limits for 2026 according to the Finnish Tax Administration.

The month in which taxation ends determines the dates

The Finnish Tax Administration does not pay all tax refunds on the same day. Taxation for 2025 income ends monthly between May and October 2026, and each month of completion has its own refund date and its own due date for tax arrears.

You can see when your own taxation ends from your tax decision or from MyTax (OmaVero). Once you know the month, you can check the lists below to see when the money arrives in your account or when the payment falls due.

Whether you get a refund or have to pay more depends on whether the tax rate on your 2025 tax card matched your final tax. If the rate was too high, the difference is refunded. If it was too low, the difference is residual tax. Deductions declared afterwards, such as the household expense deduction or travel costs, can also change the result.

Tax refund payment dates 2026

The Finnish Tax Administration pays refunds into bank accounts during the stated payment day, so the money may not show in your account first thing in the morning. The payment dates by month of completion of taxation are:

  • Taxation ends in May: refund 3.7.2026
  • Taxation ends in June: refund 3.8.2026
  • Taxation ends in July: refund 3.9.2026
  • Taxation ends in August: refund 5.10.2026
  • Taxation ends in September: refund 3.11.2026
  • Taxation ends in October: refund 3.12.2026

Refund interest and account number

Compensatory interest is paid on tax refunds. In 2026 the interest rate is 0,5 %, calculated from 1.2.2026 up to the refund payment date. The interest does not show in the amount on the tax decision; it is added to the refund on the payment date.

Check that your bank account number is up to date in OmaVero. The Finnish Tax Administration does not receive account numbers automatically from banks. If there is no account number, the refund is paid as a payment order that can be cashed at a bank later. According to the Tax Administration, if the account number is provided only on the refund date or after it, the refund is paid about a month after it is provided.

Residual tax due dates 2026

Residual tax is paid in two instalments if it is €170 or more. Residual tax of less than €10 does not need to be paid. The due dates, according to the month in which the taxation ends, are:

  • May: 1st instalment 1.7.2026, 2nd instalment 1.9.2026
  • June: 1st instalment 3.8.2026, 2nd instalment 1.10.2026
  • July: 1st instalment 1.9.2026, 2nd instalment 2.11.2026
  • August: 1st instalment 1.10.2026, 2nd instalment 1.12.2026
  • September: 1st instalment 2.11.2026, 2nd instalment 4.1.2027
  • October: 1st instalment 1.12.2026, 2nd instalment 1.2.2027

Interest on residual tax and late-payment interest

Residual tax accrues reduced late-payment interest from 1 February 2026 until the due date. In 2026 the interest rate is 4.5%. The Finnish Tax Administration (Verohallinto) always deducts €20 from the interest, so if less than €20 of interest accrues, it is not charged at all.

If you pay after the due date, late-payment interest is charged on the overdue amount. In 2026 the late-payment interest rate is 9.5%. So pay by the due date at the latest, even if you intend to seek a rectification of your taxation.

You will find payment instructions, reference numbers and the exact amount payable in OmaVero. If paying the residual tax in one go is difficult, the Finnish Tax Administration's website describes the possibility of a payment arrangement. Interest accrues on the tax even during a payment arrangement, so take this into account in your monthly budget.

If there is an error in the tax decision

A tax decision can be appealed by a request for rectification after taxation has ended. The time limit is three years from the start of the year following the end of the tax year. For tax year 2025 the deadline ends on 2.1.2029, and for tax year 2023 on 31.12.2026.

A rectification request does not postpone the due date of the residual tax. If the request is accepted and you have no other tax debts, the overpaid tax is refunded with interest.

How to avoid residual tax next year

If you notice during the year that too little tax has been withheld, you can apply for and pay additional advance tax in December–January. You then do not have to pay the reduced late-payment interest on residual tax. Another way is to update your tax card as soon as your income changes.
